A Pre-Approval Inspection assesses whether the manufacturing site, processes, and quality systems are in a state of control sufficient to support PMA approval. What the regulation says
The FDA conducts Pre-Approval Inspections (PAIs) to determine if a medical device manufacturer is in compliance with Quality System Regulation (21 CFR Part 820) and if the data submitted in a Premarket Approval (PMA) application is accurate and complete. These inspections are a critical step before granting market authorization for Class III devices, as outlined in FDA guidance documents on PMA applications.
