    In one line
Validated process used to render a device free from viable microorganisms.
    Definition
Sterilization is a validated process used to render a product free from viable microorganisms. Common modalities include ethylene oxide (EO), gamma radiation, electron beam, and steam. Each method follows its own standard: ISO 11135 for ethylene oxide, ISO 11137 for radiation and ISO 17665 for moist heat. A sterility assurance level of 10^-6 is the usual target for terminally sterilized devices. FDA has pushed to reduce ethylene oxide emissions, and EPA rules finalized in 2024 have led manufacturers to explore alternatives such as vaporized hydrogen peroxide.
    Why it matters
FDA has prioritized reducing EO use due to environmental concerns, accelerating adoption of alternative modalities under ISO 11135 and related standards.
    Common pitfalls
    • •Failing to re-validate sterilization processes after significant product or process changes can lead to non-sterile devices.
    • •Assuming a sterilization method validated for one device material or design is automatically suitable for another can result in sterilization failures.
    • •Inadequate documentation of sterilization validation and routine process control can lead to regulatory non-compliance during audits.
    • •Choosing a sterilization modality solely based on cost without considering material compatibility and biological safety can compromise device integrity and patient safety.
    • •Not performing routine biological indicator testing or dose audits can obscure a failing sterilization process until a recall is necessary.

Why compare MedTech terms side by side?

MedTech terminology is full of pairs that look interchangeable but carry very different regulatory, clinical, and commercial consequences. Picking the wrong framework, pathway, or standard early in a project can add months to a submission, invalidate clinical evidence, or trigger an audit finding. Side-by-side comparison is the fastest way to surface those differences before they become costly mistakes.

Each comparison on this page pulls from the same vendor-neutral, sourced definitions used throughout the MedTech Terms glossary. You see the one-line summary, the formal definition, why it matters in practice, common pitfalls, and the primary sources (FDA guidance, EU MDR/IVDR articles, ISO/IEC standards, MDCG documents, IMDRF principles) that back each entry. That makes the comparison defensible in regulatory strategy memos, design reviews, and submission narratives.
