    Definition

    The Innovative Medical Device Special Approval procedure offers prioritized review and additional regulator engagement for devices that meet criteria for novel technology, IP, and clinical value. Roughly analogous in spirit to FDA Breakthrough.

    What this means in practice

    Demand for the pathway has grown rapidly, but eligibility depends on domestic IP and meaningful clinical differentiation - non-trivial for foreign manufacturers.
