    Category III CPT Code

Temporary CPT code for emerging technologies and services.

Reviewed by Christian Espinosa, Founder, Blue Goat CyberLast reviewed May 5, 2026

    Definition

Category III CPT codes are temporary alphanumeric codes (ending in 'T') that track utilization of new or emerging procedures for which insufficient data exists for Category I designation. Codes sunset after five years if not converted or renewed.

    What this means in practice

Often the first formal CPT pathway for a novel device-enabled procedure. Payment is at payer discretion; many commercial payers deny Category III claims as investigational.
