    Standards

    ISO 11137

    In one line
Standard for radiation sterilization of healthcare products.
    Definition
The ISO 11137 series (Parts 1, 2, 3) specifies requirements and guidance for development, validation, and routine control of gamma, X-ray, and electron beam sterilization processes. Part 1 covers process development, validation and routine control, Part 2 covers setting the sterilization dose (such as VDmax and Method 1), and Part 3 covers dosimetry. Validation must also show that the maximum acceptable dose does not degrade materials or performance. Once validated, radiation sterilization allows dosimetric release without biological indicators.
    Why it matters
Demand for non-EO sterilization is growing; many manufacturers now maintain dual capability and qualify both routes.
    Common pitfalls
    • •Misinterpreting the dose necessary for different product types or bioburden levels can lead to ineffective sterilization or material degradation.
    • •Failing to re-validate sterilization processes after significant changes to the product, packaging, or manufacturing site can compromise sterility assurance.
    • •Inadequate documentation of the validation studies and routine monitoring procedures can result in regulatory non-compliance.
    • •Assuming a universal sterilization dose for all devices without conducting product-specific validation studies is a common error.
    • •Neglecting to consider the potential impact of radiation on material properties and device functionality can lead to product failures.

Why compare MedTech terms side by side?

MedTech terminology is full of pairs that look interchangeable but carry very different regulatory, clinical, and commercial consequences. Picking the wrong framework, pathway, or standard early in a project can add months to a submission, invalidate clinical evidence, or trigger an audit finding. Side-by-side comparison is the fastest way to surface those differences before they become costly mistakes.

Each comparison on this page pulls from the same vendor-neutral, sourced definitions used throughout the MedTech Terms glossary. You see the one-line summary, the formal definition, why it matters in practice, common pitfalls, and the primary sources (FDA guidance, EU MDR/IVDR articles, ISO/IEC standards, MDCG documents, IMDRF principles) that back each entry. That makes the comparison defensible in regulatory strategy memos, design reviews, and submission narratives.
