    Advisory Board

    In one line
Convening of external experts to advise on strategy or product.
    Definition
MedTech advisory boards bring together clinicians, scientists, and other experts to advise on product development, clinical strategy, market access, and commercial execution. Subject to Sunshine Act reporting and AdvaMed Code constraints. Boards bring outside experts together to give input on design, trials, reimbursement or strategy. Members are paid fair market value under written agreements with clear deliverables. Compliance teams check that meetings serve a real business need and are not disguised inducements.
    Why it matters
Must be structured around legitimate need, fair-market-value compensation, and documented agendas to avoid anti-kickback risk.
    Common pitfalls
    • •Improperly compensated advisory board members can pose a significant anti-kickback risk, leading to potential legal and financial penalties.
    • •Advisory boards lacking a clear, documented purpose or agenda may be viewed as a disguised inducement, rather than a legitimate scientific or business activity.
    • •Failing to report advisory board compensation and participants as required by regulations such as the Physician Payments Sunshine Act 42 CFR Part 403, Subpart I can result in fines and reputational damage.
    • •Advisory boards composed exclusively of individuals with pre-existing commercial interests, lacking diverse and independent expert perspectives, can undermine credibility.
    • •Using an advisory board as a sales channel, rather than a genuine forum for expert feedback, can lead to compliance violations and ethical breaches.

Why compare MedTech terms side by side?

MedTech terminology is full of pairs that look interchangeable but carry very different regulatory, clinical, and commercial consequences. Picking the wrong framework, pathway, or standard early in a project can add months to a submission, invalidate clinical evidence, or trigger an audit finding. Side-by-side comparison is the fastest way to surface those differences before they become costly mistakes.

Each comparison on this page pulls from the same vendor-neutral, sourced definitions used throughout the MedTech Terms glossary. You see the one-line summary, the formal definition, why it matters in practice, common pitfalls, and the primary sources (FDA guidance, EU MDR/IVDR articles, ISO/IEC standards, MDCG documents, IMDRF principles) that back each entry. That makes the comparison defensible in regulatory strategy memos, design reviews, and submission narratives.
