    AAMI TIR97(TIR97)

    In one line
AAMI Technical Information Report on post-market security risk management for medical device manufacturers, the operational companion to TIR57.
    Definition
AAMI TIR97:2019/(R)2023, Principles for medical device security: Postmarket risk management for device manufacturers, provides guidance on postmarket security risk management in the ISO 14971 safety-risk-management context and is intended to be used with AAMI TIR57.
    Why it matters
TIR97 can inform postmarket risk-management procedures. Claims about required VEX statements, metrics, notification content or deadlines require verification in the licensed report. FDA guidance is now the February 2026 edition.
    Common pitfalls
    • •Do not treat TIR57 or TIR97 guidance as independently binding lifecycle requirements. Assess applicable law and the editions actually used.
    • •Skipping the patient-safety impact assessment step and defaulting to CVSS, TIR97 expects an explicit linkage between exploitability and harm.
    • •Document risk-appropriate customer communications; verify any claimed TIR97-specific content or timing against the licensed text.

Why compare MedTech terms side by side?

MedTech terminology is full of pairs that look interchangeable but carry very different regulatory, clinical, and commercial consequences. Picking the wrong framework, pathway, or standard early in a project can add months to a submission, invalidate clinical evidence, or trigger an audit finding. Side-by-side comparison is the fastest way to surface those differences before they become costly mistakes.

Each comparison on this page pulls from the same vendor-neutral, sourced definitions used throughout the MedTech Terms glossary. You see the one-line summary, the formal definition, why it matters in practice, common pitfalls, and the primary sources (FDA guidance, EU MDR/IVDR articles, ISO/IEC standards, MDCG documents, IMDRF principles) that back each entry. That makes the comparison defensible in regulatory strategy memos, design reviews, and submission narratives.
