# Wound Care

## Definition

Wound care includes negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT, e.g., 3M/KCI V.A.C.), advanced dressings, cellular and tissue products (CTPs/skin substitutes), and emerging electrical stimulation and oxygen therapies. 

What the regulation says

Wound care products are subject to classification based on their risk to patients, which dictates the regulatory pathway and pre-market submission requirements, as per FDA 21 CFR Part 860 and EU  [MDR](/terms/mdr-reporting) Article 51. Devices such as advanced dressings typically fall into lower risk classes, while implantable or biologically derived products, like cellular and tissue products, face more stringent controls and data requirements. Manufacturers must demonstrate safety and effectiveness for their  [intended use](/terms/intended-use), aligning with principles found in  [ISO 13485](/terms/iso-13485) for quality management systems.
