Surgical robotic systems are considered medical devices by regulatory bodies like the FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and must comply with applicable regulations, such as 21 CFR Part 820 in the United States and the  [EU Medical Device Regulation](/terms/mdr) 2017/745 (EU  [MDR](/terms/mdr-reporting)). Specific considerations include software validation per  [IEC 62304](/terms/iec-62304), cybersecurity requirements detailed in FDA guidance or EN cybersecurity standards, and comprehensive risk management in accordance with  [ISO 14971](/terms/iso-14971), particularly for potential hazards related to robotic precision and human-robot interaction.
