# Spine

## Definition

Spine includes pedicle screws, interbody cages, cervical and lumbar plates, expandable cages, motion-preserving cervical disc replacements, and enabling technologies (navigation, robotics, augmented reality). 

What the regulation says

Regulatory bodies such as the FDA (in the US) and notified bodies (in the EU, under EU  [MDR](/terms/mdr-reporting) 2017/745) classify spine implants as high-risk devices due to their invasive nature and direct impact on critical bodily functions. Manufacturers must adhere to stringent pre-market submission requirements, including 21 CFR Part 812 for investigational device exemptions and 21 CFR Part 814 for pre-market approval, or Annex IX of the EU MDR for conformity assessment. Quality system regulations, such as 21 CFR Part 820 in the US and  [ISO 13485](/terms/iso-13485) globally, are critical for design, manufacturing, and  [post-market surveillance](/terms/post-market-surveillance) of these devices.
