# Integrated Delivery Network

Network of healthcare facilities under common ownership or affiliation.

Reviewed by [Christian Espinosa, Founder, Blue Goat Cyber](/authors/christian-espinosa) Last reviewed May 5, 2026

## Definition

IDNs (HCA, CommonSpirit, Ascension, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter, Intermountain) span multiple hospitals, ambulatory sites, and post-acute facilities under common ownership. They centralize purchasing, formularies, and clinical pathways.

What the regulation says

While specific regulations do not directly govern Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) as entities, their constituent facilities and services must comply with applicable MedTech regulations, such as those enforced by the FDA in the United States and the EU [MDR](/terms/mdr-reporting) in Europe, covering medical devices used within their networks. The operation of IDNs also implicates considerations for patient safety and quality management systems as outlined in standards like ISO 9001 and [ISO 13485](/terms/iso-13485) when applicable to their activities involving medical devices. Furthermore, data privacy and security within IDNs are subject to regulations like [HIPAA](/terms/hipaa) in the US and GDPR in the EU, given their extensive handling of patient health information.

## What this means in practice

Selling into IDNs typically requires corporate-level value-analysis approval before site-level adoption. Contract wins at large IDNs can swing quarterly results materially.

## Examples

- A MedTech company developing a new imaging device must navigate the corporate value analysis committee of a large IDN to get its product approved for purchase across the IDN's 50 hospitals. The IDN mandates that all medical devices integrate with its existing electronic health record system, requiring the MedTech company to demonstrate compliance with interoperability standards like HL7. An IDN implements a new cybersecurity policy requiring all connected medical devices to undergo a penetration test and risk assessment prior to procurement, adding a specific requirement for MedTech manufacturers beyond typical regulatory clearance. After a successful pilot at two facilities, a surgical robotics company works with an IDN to standardize surgical protocols and training across its network, ensuring consistent adoption and utilization of the device. A MedTech manufacturer providing disposable supplies must respond to an IDN's request for proposal that specifies unique packaging, inventory management interfaces, and delivery logistics tailored to the IDN's centralized supply chain operations. A cardiac device manufacturer collaborates with an IDN to integrate device data into the IDN's population health management platform, requiring secure APIs and adherence to data privacy regulations like HIPAA.

Common pitfalls

- • A common pitfall is underestimating the complexity of an IDN's internal approval processes, which often involves multiple stakeholders beyond clinical users.
- • Companies often fail to recognize that IDN contracts may require specialized cybersecurity and data integration agreements distinct from standard device sales.
- • Another mistake is neglecting the impact of an IDN's centralized formulary or preferred product lists on device adoption and market access.
- • Ignoring the IDN's own quality management and risk management frameworks can lead to friction in product implementation and support.
- • Many MedTech companies mistakenly believe that a single site-level approval within an IDN translates to network-wide adoption without further strategic engagement.

## Frequently asked questions

How do IDNs impact MedTech market access?

IDNs centralize purchasing and clinical pathways, meaning that gaining approval at the corporate level can significantly open market access across numerous facilities. Conversely, failing to secure an IDN contract can limit access to a large segment of the healthcare market.
