# Essential Performance

Performance of a clinical function whose loss or degradation would result in unacceptable risk.

Reviewed by [Christian Espinosa, Founder, Blue Goat Cyber](/authors/christian-espinosa) Last reviewed May 5, 2026

## Definition

Per [IEC 60601-1](/terms/iec-60601-1), essential performance is the performance of a clinical function, other than that related to basic safety, where loss or degradation beyond limits specified by the manufacturer results in an unacceptable risk.

What the regulation says

[IEC 60601-1](/terms/iec-60601-1) defines essential performance as the performance of a clinical function where its loss or degradation beyond manufacturer-specified limits leads to unacceptable risk, distinct from basic safety. Manufacturers must identify and document the essential performance characteristics of their medical electrical equipment, as outlined in IEC 60601-1 clause 4.3.

## What this means in practice

Defining essential performance correctly is foundational for risk analysis, testing, and [labeling](/terms/labeling) under the 60601 family of standards.

## Examples

- A ventilator's ability to deliver a specified tidal volume within a defined tolerance is an example of essential performance, as its failure could directly harm the patient.
- For an infusion pump, maintaining the programmed drug delivery rate accurately falls under essential performance, safeguarding against under- or over-dosing.
- The display of vital signs on a patient monitor within an acceptable refresh rate and accuracy range represents essential performance, critical for clinical decision-making.

Common pitfalls

- • Failing to distinguish between basic safety and essential performance can lead to an incomplete risk assessment.
- • Not clearly defining the limits for loss or degradation of essential performance can result in subjective and inconsistent evaluations.
- • Assuming all functions of a device contribute to essential performance can overcomplicate testing and validation efforts.
- • Ignoring the impact of reasonably foreseeable misuse on essential performance can leave critical risks unaddressed.

## Frequently asked questions

How does essential performance relate to risk management?

Essential performance is a critical input to the risk management process, as defined in [ISO 14971](/terms/iso-14971). Identifying unacceptable risks associated with its loss or degradation drives risk control measures.

Is essential performance only relevant for IEC 60601-1 standards?
