# Burn Rate

Rate at which a company spends cash, typically expressed monthly.

Reviewed by [Christian Espinosa, Founder, Blue Goat Cyber](/authors/christian-espinosa) Last reviewed May 5, 2026

## Definition

Burn rate is the speed at which a company consumes its cash reserves. Gross burn = total monthly operating expenses; net burn = gross burn minus revenue.

What the regulation says

While burn rate is primarily a financial metric, regulatory bodies like the FDA or those overseeing EU [MDR](/terms/mdr-reporting) do not directly regulate a company's burn rate. However, financial stability, indirectly reflected by a sustainable burn rate, is crucial for maintaining a robust Quality Management System (QMS) and ensuring continuous compliance with regulations such as 21 CFR 820, [ISO 13485](/terms/iso-13485), or the EU MDR. Adequate funding prevents shortcuts that could compromise device safety and effectiveness.

## What this means in practice

Pre-revenue MedTech companies have only gross burn. As commercial sales begin, net burn becomes the meaningful metric.

## Examples

- A startup MedTech company uses its gross burn rate to project how long its seed funding will last before needing to secure additional investment for ISO 13485 certification and initial regulatory submissions.
- A company developing a novel diagnostic device projects its net burn rate to ensure it can cover ongoing operational costs, clinical trial expenses, and eventual FDA 510(k) submission fees.
- During a post-market surveillance phase, a company analyzes its burn rate to confirm it has sufficient funds for handling potential adverse event reporting as required by EU MDR Annex III and continuous improvement activities.

Common pitfalls

- • Confusing burn rate with profitability; a company can have a high burn rate while still being profitable if revenue significantly outpaces expenses.
- • Underestimating the financial resources required for clinical trials, regulatory submissions, and post-market surveillance activities.
- • Failing to account for unexpected delays in regulatory approvals or market adoption, which can significantly extend the period of cash consumption.
- • Overlooking the impact of supply chain disruptions or quality issues on cash flow, as these can necessitate unplanned expenditures.
